Carnegie Conversations - Professor Peter Adamson

The Carnegie Club of St Andrews is delighted to announce our second speaker of the year: Professor Peter Adamson who will lead a discussion on animal ethics in Islamic philosophy.

Professor Adamson is a professor of philosophy at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and at King's College London. Professor Adamson's research and writings study the history and philosophy of ancient philosophy, including both Greek and Arabic philosophy. He also hosts the History of Philosophy podcast, has contributed to BBC Radio 40s 'In Our Time', and has authored several articles and publications including his latest work: 'Don't Think for Yourself. Authority and Belief in Medieval Philosophy.' His outstanding career has been the recipient of both the Philip Leverhulme Prize in 2003 and the Schelling Prize in 2022. Professor Adamson's lecture will focus on the following:

It's commonly assumed that philosophers first started to take a profound interest in animal minds and animal ethics relatively recently - perhaps since the 18th and 19th century, thanks to Bentham, Darwin and others. But in fact animals have been important in philosophy since antiquity, and in many different cultures. This lecture will focus on the topic in the Islamic world, looking at the way that philosophers like Avicenna developed new ideas about what animals can do, and how we should treat them. They debated the question of whether animals are rational, and suggested that benevolence should be extended to any creature that can suffer, sometimes sounding not unlike modern animal ethicists.

The talk will consist of Professor Adamson's lecture followed by audience questions. Tickets below:

Andrew Carnegie: Life & Legacy

The Carnegie Club of St Andrews is delighted to announce our first speaker of the year: Dr. Frank Quinault who will lead a discussion on our namesake and university rector, Andrew Carnegie.

Dr. Quinault first came to St Andrews in 1972, as a Lecturer in Psychology. Before retiring in 2007 he held many other university posts, including: Assistant Principal for External Affairs, Hebdomadar, with responsibility for student welfare (and discipline!); and Director of Teaching and Learning. He also chaired the board of the Students’ Association for six years. Frank was Chairman of the Byre Theatre, is a past president of the St Andrews Burns Club and of the Rotary Club of St Andrews.

Dr. Quinault will discuss the history and legacy of Andrew Carnegie, our club's namesake and a rector of the University of St Andrews. Andrew Carnegie was born in Dunfermline, Fife in 1835. After immigrating to Pennsylvania in 1848, Andrew Carnegie eventually became one of American history's principal industrialists, philanthropists, and pacifists. His story of charity, dedication, innovation, and progressive outlook inspires and forms the central pillar of our club. Due to this, it is a profound privilege to be able to host Dr. Quinault as he explores the history of Andrew Carnegie's life, as well as his influence in our university during his time as rector.

The talk will consist of a talk by Dr. Quinault followed by an interview. If you would like to learn more about our club or meet more of our members, this is a perfect opportunity.

Tickets for £2.90 below:

The Carnegie Club of St Andrews is delighted to announce our first speaker of Carnegie Conversations: Alex O’Connor, also known as Cosmic Skeptic.

He is the host of the Within Reason podcast and his YouTube channel has over 80 million views.

Previous philosophical concerns for Alex include the existence of God and theological and animal ethics.
